Outdoor Recreation

Prerequisites

A commitment to trying new activities, being challenged. Level 2 Outdoor Recreation is an advantage, but not essential. Must be available for one after school practical session a fortnight. HOD approval required – you need to have a regard for safety, organisation and awareness in outdoor settings.

Course Information
The course is based on the following:

Kayaking Skills - Shotover, Kawarau & Clutha Rivers (3 day Clutha River Journey)
Tramping / Bushcraft Skills (3-4 day tramp)
Mountaincraft Skills - snow camp and expedition’s
Avalanche Awareness
Conservation Issues

The course includes one afternoon session which continues to 5.30 pm.
There are four multi-day trips, some of which will involve weekends.

Course Cost
$400 - to be paid in two instalments (Terms 1 & 3).
This covers all trip costs (but not food or personal gear hire).

Assessment is made up of NZQA Unit Standards. A National Certificate in Recreation can also be obtained. The course combines both practical and theory components. A logbook of all practical activities is a requirement.
Why this course?
The Wakatipu area is blessed with an excellent environment in terms of outdoor recreation: lakes, rivers, a variety of mountainous country, bush and good rock offer many opportunities to learn new skills and recreate. This course aims to provide students with an educational means to utilise their surrounding environment.

What does this Course lead on to?
It provides a sound introduction to various adventure tourism and adventure recreation / pursuit courses available at Polytechnics.
